AboutAbout Us

Leanne Stewart brings the community of Stonewall together in the last turn-of-the-century building on Main Street. She is the owner of McLeod house Tea Room & Gift Shop, which opened in 2003 following a remodeling project that included adding a veranda, landscaping and interior decorating. The shop honors the McLeod family, who built the home and whose only son, Alan McLeod, is a World War I Victoria Cross recipient. Leanne serves a variety of homemade desserts and 20 choices of loose tea. Her daily menu includes a homemade soup, four types of sandwiches, salad with freshly made dressing and a daily hot special. Customers enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and two spacious dining rooms.

All patrons place their reservations early for Leanne’s popular high teas, which include teacup readings as well as a three-tiered tray of dainties, party sandwiches and scones. The Christmas and spring open houses also contribute to merriment on Main Street. The McLeod House carries four rooms of gift items, including seasonal selections, fashions and personal accessories. Leanne gets to know her customers, because they keep coming back to share their stories, offer their encouragement and enjoy the gracious, casual tone of the McLeod house, a place where men, women and children feel at home. Bring a historical perspective to your next outing with food and shopping fun at McLeod House Tea Room & Gift Shop.

AboutHistory

Alan

Alan had an affinity for the military at a young age, so on his 18th birthday, April 1917, he was off to pilot training. By August 1917, Alan was on his way to Britain where he joined the Royal Flying Corps', No 82 Sqn.

On March 21, 1918, over Albert France, Second Lieutenant McLeod, with his observer in an FK8, destroyed an enemy triplane and was immediately attacked by eight more, two of which they brought down. McLeod's bomber was hit in the petrol tank and the plane burst into flames. Both pilot and observer were badly wounded. McLeod, by side slipping the plane steeply, tried to keep the flames away from his observer. He was able to crash land the plane in No Man's Land, and not withstanding his own injuries, dragged his comrade from the burning wreckage. Under heavy enemy fire McLeod carried his companion on to comparative safety before collapsing from exhaustion.

Valor invariably is a trait of youth. At the age of 18 years old, Alan Arnett McLeod, became the youngest Canadian pilot ever to win the Victoria Cross in World War I.

On Sept. 5, 1918, King George summoned the young hero to Buckingham Palace and decorated him with the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the world.

After returning to a hero's welcome in Stonewall, McLeod died of pneumonia on November 6, 1918, after contacting influenza.
