The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has become the celebrated hub of Winnipeg’s rich cultural life and has gained international recognition for its New Music Festival. The WSO performs to over 100,000 audience members each year and more than 80 concerts from September to May consisting of four major series: Including Masterworks (classical repertoire), Musically Speaking (e-media take on live symphonic music), WSO Pops (Broadway show tunes and popular orchestral pieces), Sundays with the Family (concerts for kids 12 and under) and a variety of Add-On Performances throughout the season. New this year are the Indigenous Festival and Symphony Summers. The WSO also offers a concert season for Brandon, Manitoba featuring repertoire from the Masterworks series.
The WSO continues to provide the musical foundation for other arts groups in the province such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Manitoba Opera and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. In addition, WSO musicians are hired for many productions and concerts that come to Winnipeg each year. The orchestra tours rural Manitoba annually during the holiday season in the Manitoba Hydro Power Smart Holiday Express Tour visiting areas like Virden, Portage la Prairie, Neepawa, Winkler and Morden.
The WSO believes in the importance of providing education and outreach programs to all Manitobans. From nursery school through university, our education programs reach more than 25,000 students annually. Striving to promote symphonic music, the WSO also partners with local organizations and develops community initiatives.
